Come on out!

Christmas gifts and decorations.  Hand made crafts.  Baked goods.  Artwork.  Something for everyone.

On Friday, November 6, we will have our annual craft show in Sunset Village, starting at 9:00 a.m.  This year promises to be another event with many returning crafters as well as those who are new this year.

Tours of our facility as well as an inside look at a model apartment will also be available.

You won't want to miss this one.  Hope to see you there.

It is with great excitment & anticipation that we are all looking forward to next week.  From the groundbreaking of our original Sunset Association building in 1972, until present, we have been able to serve many thousands of West Michigan senior citizens.  It is a privilege to be able to continue that service by opening our newest campus, Waterford Place, on the corner of 18th Ave and Port Sheldon in Jenison.  Our first residents will be moving into their new homes beginning October 1, 2009!

Won't you join us for our Grand Opening Celebration?  Our three day open house starts next Thursday, September 24th, and continues Friday and Saturday, the 25th and 26th.  Visit us anytime between 10:00am and 4:00pm on those days for refreshments and tours.

We hope to see you there.

As I came back to work at Sunset on the Monday after Mother's Day, memories flooded over me of the wonderful years my mother had when she lived here.

Eleven years ago my mother moved into a beautiful one bedroom apartment in Village I, where she lived for 9 years.  It was a time of increasing her independence and opportunity for a full and joy-filled life.  She participated in educational classes, exercise classes and computer instruction classes.  She enjoyed scenic bus trips and programing in the auditorium.  She enjoyed walking the halls, knowing she could get in a 2-3 mile walk all inside - one of her favorite pasttimes before...

Imagine my surprise when I came to work last week, opened my email, & saw an invitation from a resident to be her Facebook friend.

Sunset has had a computer lab and the opportunity to learn about computers for 10 years.  There is no charge to residents for the classes, which range from a beginners class, to advanced use of the computer.  Since there are no tests, and no grades, it does not seem intimidating for residents who want to keep up with technology.

It is so interesting to see the difference over the years of the number of residents moving in with their computers.  Ten years ago most of those taking classes did not know what a computer mouse was.  Today many residents already have the basic knowledge needed, & want to learn more.  Internet, email, Facebook and Craigslist are just a few of the ways our computer lab is used by residents.  Most of these people started in the beginners class.
